Once in a Summer: Her Name Was Lola

My hands are shaking as I write this down; whether from fear or excitement I do not know. I only know that this may be my only chance to explain myself, and I have to somehow record it down before i forget. I was diagnozed with Alzheimer’s disease about six months ago, and I am desperately trying to hold on to my lucidity. In order to help me remember, there are three things I ask myself daily, and these are my answers: my name is Abby Lily Moore, this is the year 2011, and I am sixty years old. Although my mind is failing me, memories of that summer so long ago in 1969 seem so fresh in my mind; and the impact of the events that transpired still weighs heavily on my conscience. Every story must have its beginning, and mine only started to take shape that summer. Yes, it all began with a girl named Lola.
